Digitonin, a type of saraponin, is a non-ionic surfactant used to solubilize membrane bound proteins and to permeabilize cell membranes. Digitonin has a high affinity for cholesterol allowing it to selectively permeablize cholesterol-rich membranes (like the plamsam membrane) while leaving other membranes (like organelle membranes) intact. This allows for introduction of reagents or drugs into the cell and for extraction of membrane proteins.
